Black By God is a community-led news organization based in West Virginia that aims to provide a more nuanced portrayal of the Black Experience in the Appalachian region.

We seek to center Black stories and life in all their manifestations in West Virginia and Appalachia, providing coverage in four categories: civics, community, culture, and coin.

Our name, Black By God, was inspired by the expression"West by God Virginia," a phrase whose origins are unknown but which has been used to represent the state and its people.

BBG leverages a multimedia platform that prioritizes web and social media, with a print publication, SMS alerts, and events to make our news more accessible.

Our platform serves as a virtual homeplace for all West Virginians, no matter where they live. We aim to be known as an incubator for excellence, where emerging and established talent are nurtured, and exceptional storytelling, design, and innovation are fostered.

Our target audience is Black West Virginians, but our rings of influence start local and expand across our Appalachian allies, the West Virginia diaspora, and a world of readers concerned about the integrity of media of information in American media.

BBG was founded in 2020 by poet, performer, and publisher Crystal Good.
