REAL ID Deadline Is Here: What West Virginians Need to Know Before They Travel

If you’re planning to fly, take a cruise, or visit a federal building this summer, make sure your ID is up to date, because as of May 7, 2025, the federal government is officially enforcing the REAL ID requirement.

That means your standard West Virginia driver’s license will no longer be accepted for:

  • Boarding domestic flights
  • Entering federal buildings or courthouses
  • Accessing military bases
  • Taking most cruises from U.S. ports

The REAL ID Act was passed after 9/11 to strengthen national security. After years of delays and extensions, the deadline has now arrived, and travelers who haven’t made the switch could be turned away at the gate.

What Is a REAL ID?

A REAL ID is a state-issued driver’s license or identification card that meets federal security standards. It looks similar to a regular WV license, but features a gold star in the upper right corner. This star indicates that your ID is REAL ID-compliant.

If your license doesn’t have the star, it won’t work for federal purposes, even if it hasn’t expired.

How to Get One in West Virginia

You can receive same-day approval for a REAL ID at your local DMV, as long as you bring the required documents. Here’s what to have with you:

  • A certified birth certificate or a valid U.S. passport
  • Your Social Security card or another official document showing your SSN (like a W-2)
  • Two proofs of West Virginia residency (such as a utility bill, lease, or bank statement)
  • Legal documents showing any name changes (such as a marriage certificate)

Appointments can be made online at transportation.wv.gov/DMV, but walk-ins are also welcome. Many DMV offices may already have your documents on file, so call ahead to check.

Still Have Questions?

Contact the West Virginia DMV at (304) 558-3900 or visit their website to confirm your documents and find your nearest location. Don’t wait until it’s too late.
