JR Clifford editor and publisher of West Virginia’s Pioneer Press, America’s longest-running Black newspaper (1882-1917) of the era said,

“To run a country (Black) newspaper one would have the constitution of a long-eared mule, the nerve of Teddy Roosevelt the self-control of the ancient martyrs, the capacity of a bookkeeper for detail, the ability to “standoff” the bill collector, a cob pipe, a pair of shears, a pasta pot, a high education and a railroad pass.” (1914)
