Black Policy Day is celebrating a major milestone in 2026 as it marks its fifth anniversary and invites communities from across the state to be part of the experience.

Taking place on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the West Virginia State Capitol, Black Policy Day brings together students, families, educators, advocates, and community members for a day of learning, connection, and civic engagement.

Since its beginning, Black Policy Day has focused on creating welcoming and understandable entry points into policy spaces for West Virginians who are not often part of the legislative process or who have not previously had opportunities to learn how state government works. The event helps break down how policy decisions are made and how everyday people can better understand and participate in shaping the future of their communities.

Each year, students have grown to create their own spaces for learning and growth at Black Policy Day. Through shared experiences, conversations, and exposure to the legislative process, young people build confidence, deepen their understanding of policy, and begin to see themselves as active participants in civic life. For many, the experience includes their first time at the State Capitol and meaningful engagement with how the government functions.

Over the past five years, Black Policy Day has grown into a trusted statewide convening, connecting communities across counties and strengthening relationships with educators, community organizations, and policymakers. Community members have used this space to speak directly with legislators and share concerns around issues that impact their daily lives, including education, healthcare, economic stability, and civic participation in West Virginia.

Organizers describe Black Policy Day as more than a one-day event. It is a pathway for continued civic participation, helping people leave with knowledge, confidence, and tools to stay engaged long after the day ends.

As the fifth anniversary approaches, the focus remains on joy, learning, and community power. Black Policy Day continues to create space for people to come together, ask questions, share experiences, and take part in shaping the future of West Virginia.
