Walk Into Legacy: Harpers Ferry Black Heritage Guided Tour Returns

By Black By God – The West Virginian
If you’re looking for a day trip that feeds both your spirit and your curiosity, make your way to Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. On Saturday, September 27 at 10 a.m., join the annual Black Heritage Guided Walking Tour, offering travelers and locals alike the chance to uncover the overlooked stories that shaped this historic community.
Beyond the Raid: The Story Beneath the Surface
Harpers Ferry is best known in the textbooks: John Brown’s Raid, the Armory, the Civil War. But what about the generations of Black families who lived, worked, and worshipped here? This tour shifts the spotlight to them, tracing history along Fillmore Street, Washington Street, and the West Ridge neighborhood.
Led by guides with roots in the area, the walking tour brings you into the world of Harpers Ferry’s African American community from the late 1800s through the mid-1900s. Visitors will step inside two historic Black churches and hear stories passed down through residents and descendants.
A Walk With Purpose
This is more than a scenic stroll; it’s a cultural pilgrimage. The tour invites participants to experience Black Harpers Ferry through community memory, resilience, and pride.
And it comes with a mission: proceeds help restore the First Zion Baptist Church, a vital landmark in the town’s Black history. After the tour, guests are invited to gather for an ice cream social, a sweet reminder that history is best honored together.
