Hey there friends and BBG readers,
If we don’t have a diverse group of people becoming journalists, then we miss so many of the stories that matter.
Imagine if more journalists and media owners were people of color.
BBG performs an essential public service just by existing, and we want to do more, so it doesn’t take decades to recognize that something is a story that requires telling.
I started BBG when America was having a racial reckoning after George Floyd’s and Breonna Taylor’s tragic deaths at the hands of police. I knew journalism could do better and jumped into publishing, having never stepped foot in a newsroom.
This is where you come in.
I am taking a considerable risk for a huge opportunity to create a substantial structural, and long overdue, change in the West Virginia media landscape. The state’s Press Association says that in 35 years, they have only known of three black reporters, and I am one. And in 2022 I am WV’s first Black woman to own a news outlet.
Can you stand with BBG today as we share the stories that desperately need to be reported?
