BBG’s ‘Whose the Dandiest?’ Contest Celebrates Black Dandyism in the Heart of Appalachia

The “Whose the Dandiest?” contest, presented by Black By God (BBG), is a vibrant celebration of Black Dandyism in Appalachia. Running from April 28 to May 5, 2025, this week-long event invites participants to showcase their interpretations of Black Dandyism—a tradition where fashion becomes a form of resistance, refinement, and reclamation.
What Is Black Dandyism?
Dandyism is often misunderstood as mere vanity. Historically, it emerged as a philosophy of refinement—a belief in the transformative power of style, poise, and individuality. In the hands of Black artists, activists, and cultural icons, dandyism has taken on even deeper meaning. Black Dandyism is defiance draped in elegance. It’s the art of dressing with such precision and power that one’s very presence becomes a political act. From the crisp collars of Black educators in the segregated South to the flamboyant color and confidence of Congolese Sapeurs, Black Dandyism has always challenged societal norms, asserting dignity in the face of exclusion and turning fashion into armor.
The Contest: Celebrating Style and Heritage
At the center of this contest are BBG publisher Crystal Good and Meredith German, the creative director of luxury heritage brand Bienen Davis. Their collaboration birthed the Bricktop Collection, a limited-edition handbag line paying homage to Ada “Bricktop” Smith, an Appalachian native who became a global icon of elegance and sophistication.
Participants from all walks of life are encouraged to don their finest attire, blending traditional Appalachian elements with the flamboyant flair characteristic of Black Dandyism. The contest aims to surprise the world with the existence and vibrancy of Black Dandyism in West Virginia, showcasing how fashion can be a powerful statement of identity and resistance.
How to Participate
To enter the contest and stand a chance to win the exclusive “Bricktop” BBG x Bienen Davis bag, participants should tag @BBG in their posts and stories, displaying their unique take on modern dandyism. Judges—including notable figures like @wildandwonderful, @cgoodwoman, @leeshialee, @meredithgerman_, @keatonburton, and Jayli Philips—will select the winner on Met Gala night.
Aligning with the Met Gala
The contest culminates on Monday, May 5, 2025, coinciding with the Met Gala, fashion’s most prestigious event. This year’s Met Gala theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” honors the enduring legacy of Black Dandyism. The accompanying exhibition, co-curated by Monica L. Miller and Andrew Bolton, explores the significance of fashion in shaping Black identities across the Atlantic diaspora.
A Community United in Purpose and Pride
In the end, the “Whose the Dandiest?” contest crowns not just a winner but celebrates a community united in purpose and pride. Through threads and textures, colors and cuts, participants tell stories that resonate far beyond the mountains, echoing a universal message: fashion is not just about appearance—it’s about identity, heritage, and the unyielding spirit of resistance.
Style boldly. Post proudly. Let the legacy live on.
