BBG Live to Discuss Growing Concerns Over HHOMA and Black Representation in West Virginia
Black By God: The West Virginian will continue its weekly BBG Live community conversation series this Friday with a public discussion focused on the Herbert Henderson Office of Minority Affairs (HHOMA), Black representation in West Virginia, and growing community concerns surrounding minority affairs and DEI conversations across the state.
The BBG Live discussion will stream Friday, May 22, from 8–9 PM EST on Facebook Live and YouTube.
This week’s guests include Pastor Matthew Watts, longtime West Virginia civil rights advocate and founder of HOPE Community Development Corporation, and Delegate Mike Pushkin, Chair of the West Virginia Democratic Party. The conversation will be hosted by Black By God publisher Crystal Good.
The live discussion comes as public debate surrounding the Herbert Henderson Office of Minority Affairs continues growing online and throughout Black communities in West Virginia. In recent weeks, Pastor Matthew Watts has used social media to raise concerns about HHOMA leadership, accountability, and the future of minority affairs in West Virginia.

The Herbert Henderson Office of Minority Affairs was established to serve as a bridge between state government and minority communities, advocating for issues impacting Black West Virginians and other underserved populations across Appalachia.
Friday’s BBG Live episode aims to create space for a larger public conversation about HHOMA, Black leadership in West Virginia, civic engagement, accountability, and the role minority affairs offices play in supporting communities across the state.
As Chair of the West Virginia Democratic Party, Delegate Mike Pushkin is expected to respond to questions and comments from viewers during the live broadcast.
Black By God says conversations like these are part of its mission to ensure Black communities in Appalachia are seen, heard, and included in statewide conversations shaping the future of West Virginia.
The weekly BBG Live series regularly features conversations with elected officials, organizers, artists, educators, entrepreneurs, and local leaders discussing issues connected to Black Appalachia, West Virginia politics, economic opportunity, education, culture, and community development.
Topics expected during Friday’s discussion include:
• The current status of HHOMA
• Why the Herbert Henderson Office of Minority Affairs matters
• Black representation in West Virginia government
• DEI and minority affairs conversations in West Virginia
• Civic engagement and voter participation
• Accountability and transparency in state leadership
• Community concerns raised by Black West Virginians
Community members are encouraged to tune in live, ask questions, leave comments, and participate in the discussion during the broadcast.
