Honoring Ret. Colonel Lew Gary Tyree: A Life of Service, Leadership, and Love

Black By God joins the Charleston community and beyond in mourning the loss of Retired Colonel Lew Gary Tyree, who passed away on January 27, 2025. A dedicated public servant, attorney, military leader, and pillar of his community, Lew’s life was a testament to integrity, perseverance, and unwavering love for his family, friends, and home state of West Virginia.
Born and raised in Charleston, Lew’s journey from Washington Manor to the highest ranks of military and civic leadership is an inspiring legacy. A proud graduate of West Virginia State University, WVU College of Law, and Harvard Kennedy School, he was a brilliant legal mind and a fierce advocate for his community. His 30-year career in the U.S. Army Reserves, culminating as Commander of the 38th Ordnance Group, reflected his deep commitment to service.
Beyond his military and legal accomplishments, Lew was a devoted mentor, advocate, and volunteer, serving countless organizations with the same passion he poured into his family. His leadership extended to the NAACP, ACLU, Kanawha County Library Board, WV Human Rights Commission, and Charleston Urban Renewal Authority, among many others.
Lew Tyree was a man who made everyone feel seen, valued, and uplifted. His warmth, wisdom, and joy were as infectious as his commitment to justice was steadfast. His passing leaves an irreplaceable void, but his impact will be felt for generations.
We extend our deepest condolences to his beloved wife of 43 years, Belinda, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and the entire Tyree family. May his light continue to guide us as we honor his remarkable legacy.
Rest in power, Col. Tyree—your service and love will never be forgotten.
