Heritage Towers Museum & Culture Center is celebrating KWANZAA – 2024 at the Recovery Sports Grill, in downtown Charleston, on Friday December 27th, at 7:00 PM.
Our celebration this year falls on the second day of Kwanzaa…which is “Day 2 Kuji-cha-gulia” (Self-Determination).
The name Kwanzaa derived from the phrase “matunda ya kwanza” which means “first fruits” in Swahili, based on African harvest traditions now celebrated annually from December 26 to January 1. Each day of Kwanzaa is devoted to celebrating the seven “7” basic values of African culture or the “Nguzo Saba” which in Swahili means the seven principles.
The event starts with the lighting of the candles and offering a brief explanation or recital of the Seven (7) Principles of Kwanzaa. Each day is celebrated in coordination and appreciation of values which underscores pride in ancestral heritage and to our African American communities today. We will focus and discuss the 2nd principle “Self-Determination” on this day of the celebration itself.
Each family celebrates Kwanzaa in its own way which may include songs and dances, African drums, storytelling, poetry reading etc. The last day of Kwanzaa culminates with a feast “large traditional meal” to end the celebration.
Heritage Towers welcomes everyone to join us in the celebration of this annual event.
