BBG Tech: State and Local Cybersecurity Grant Program
By: Aiden Satterfield
The State and Local Cybersecurity Grant Program (SLCGP) which started in 2023, aims to help state and local governments reduce cyber risks and strengthen their defenses. The program focuses on four main goals: establishing proper governance structures, assessing current cybersecurity posture, implementing security measures based on risk, and ensuring personnel are well-trained in cybersecurity responsibilities.
For the FY2023 grant cycle, West Virginia prioritized key areas such as implementing multi-factor authentication, improving logging practices, encrypting data, moving away from unsupported software, and using secure passwords. Other priorities include ensuring reliable system backups, migrating to the GOV domain, enhancing endpoint detection, and conducting penetration testing. Cybersecurity awareness training for personnel is also crucial.
Eligible applicants for the program include local governments, public educational institutions, and certain other public entities. However, nonprofit and for-profit organizations are not eligible.
The application period runs through April 30, 2025, and projects must be completed by November 30, 2027.
Applicants can access resources like application instructions and the Cybersecurity Mini Risk Assessment to guide their submissions. More details are available on the West Virginia Cyber Grant website. Through this program, local governments can strengthen their cybersecurity, improving resilience against rising cyber threats.
