How the Potter Family Is Growing Junior Golf in West Virginia

With two sons competing and their father leading a statewide junior tour, the Potters are helping create a stronger pathway for young golfers.

On golf courses across West Virginia this fall, the Potter family will be doing what it knows best: playing, coaching and finding new ways to grow the game.

Brothers Brooks and Lennox Potter are both competing this season, while their father, Davey, is helping build opportunities for young golfers throughout the state as director of the West Virginia league for The Junior Tour Powered by Under Armour. Davey made his debut as league director in spring 2026, building on more than 13 years of experience in junior golf.

Brooks, 11, started golfing at about 4, just as his older brother Maddox did. He has qualified for the Under Armour Summer Junior Nationals three times and has competed in U.S. Kids Golf, qualifying for its World Championships several times. More recently, he began playing Callaway events through the West Virginia Golf Association.

“He’s an amazing little golfer, and it’s so much fun to watch him grow and see how much he loves playing,” his mother, Jennifer Potter, said.

One of the family’s favorite golf memories came in 2023, when Maddox and Brooks both qualified for the Under Armour Junior Nationals at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

“We got to have two of our boys competing in Florida that year, which was really cool,” Jennifer said.

Lennox, who will turn 15 this year, took a different route into the sport. Golf wasn’t initially one of his interests, but he began playing after Maddox’s illness. He went on to play two seasons on his middle school team and now competes for his high school.

Maddox “Mad Dog” Potter died on Jan. 24, 2025, at age 16 after a battle with pediatric cancer. A passionate junior golfer, he had competed through First Tee–West Virginia, U.S. Kids Golf, the Callaway Tour and the Under Armour Tour, including the 2023 national championship.

That same day, Charleston Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin proclaimed Jan. 24 as Maddox “MadDog” Potter Day, recognizing his impact on the Charleston community.

Today, his influence is being carried forward through the work of his family and the Maddox Potter Foundation, which supports families facing childhood cancer, pediatric cancer research and the growth of junior golf.

For Davey, coaching is about giving young people the kind of investment he received growing up. A graduate of West Virginia State University, he credits coaches, teachers, administrators and mentors with helping shape his own commitment to young people.

“I knew then that I wanted to do the same for other kids someday, and coaching is where I feel like I can do that best,” he said.

The West Virginia Under Armour league includes golfers ages 6 through 18 competing in a series of nine-hole tournaments, giving young players an opportunity to develop their games and pursue national competition.

For the Potters, growing golf is about more than producing better players. It is about giving young people a place to compete, connect, build confidence and discover where the game can take them. Davey is coaching. Brooks and Lennox are competing. And across West Virginia, the next generation is stepping onto the course.
