McDowell County Public Records: Sept. 12 through Sept. 19, 2026

In 1950, the Black residents of McDowell accounted for nearly 25% of the county’s population, and made up over 35% of all coal miners in the region. Today, less than 5% of the nation’s coal miners are Black, and McDowell County’s Black population has fallen to just 11.3%.
