People Moving the Mountains: Phil Hancock, To Capital Hill and Back to the Coalfields

This week, BlackByGod salutes Bluefield High School graduate Phil Hancock on his recent appointment to the Bluefield State University Board of Governors. Hancock, whose roots trace through both Mercer and McDowell Counties, is the current director of federal government relations for the Washington-based Norfolk Southern Corp.
Hancock holds a law degree from mNortheastern University, a bachelor’s degree in political science from West Virginia Wesleyan, and a master’s degree in industrial and labor relations from WVU. During his time working as a legislative assistant for former U.S. Senator Joe Manchin, Hancock helped secure healthcare and pension protections for retired coal miners. Hancock also serves on the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Corporate Advisory Council, and volunteers with the American Legion Mountaineer Boys State Leadership Academy.

The Bluefield State University Board of Governors oversees the university’s financial, business and educational policies. With his recent appointment to the board, Hancock will be involved with institutional and campus planning, academic program review, financial oversight, and the evaluation and appointment of future university presidents.
