Bill Withers, the Iconic Singer-Songwriter from West Virginia, was honored in the 3rd Annual Bill Withers Memorial Celebration in Beckley at the Intermodal Gateway Saturday, July 8, 2023. 

Bill Withers, the legendary singer-songwriter known for his soulful voice and timeless melodies, hailed from the scenic hills of West Virginia. With his remarkable talent, he crafted unforgettable songs that touched the hearts of millions worldwide. Withers, who sadly passed away in 2020, left behind a rich musical legacy, including chart-topping hits such as “Lean on Me,” “Ain’t No Sunshine,” and “Lovely Day.”

Another noteworthy aspect of Bill Withers’ music is its influence on subsequent generations. One example is the iconic intro sample from his song “Grandma’s Hands,” which the renowned R&B group Blackstreet used in their 1996 hit single “No Diggity.” Withers’ soulful melody and poignant lyrics provided the foundation for Blackstreet’s successful track, blending the old and the new to create a unique musical fusion.

Born on July 4, 1938, in the small coal-mining town of Slab Fork, West Virginia, Bill Withers displayed an early passion for music. Growing up in a modest family, he honed his skills by playing the guitar and singing in the local church choir. Withers later joined the United States Navy, serving for nine years before embarking on a career in music.

With his distinctive blend of soul, R&B, and folk, Bill Withers rose to prominence in the 1970s, capturing the hearts of listeners worldwide. His breakthrough single, “Ain’t No Sunshine,” released in 1971, became an instant hit.
