The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is a civil rights organization in the United States founded in 1909 to advance justice for African Americans. Some of the founding members of the group include W. E. B. Du Bois, Mary White Ovington, Moorfield Storey and Ida B. Wells. According to the NAACP website, the organization’s mission is “to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate race-based discrimination.” The NAACP has a century-long history of grassroots activism and community organizing. With more than 2,200 units across the country, powered by over 2 million members, the NAACP has remained a leader in the fight against institutional racism.
“From bold investigations of mob brutality and protests of mass murders to testimony before congressional committees on the vicious tactics used to bar African Americans from the ballot box, it was the talent and tenacity of NAACP members that saved lives and laid the foundation upon which our fight for racial justice and equity is built.”
This statement made on the NAACP website embodies the ethos of the organization and speaks to how the NAACP has actively fought on behalf of Black communities across the country for decades.
The NAACP of West Virginia, in particular, has a long and rich history of community engagement and socio-political activism. From the mistreatment of students of color to violent hate crimes, the WV NAACP has be a champion for the Black community of West Virginia by illuminating our shared injustices and taking action against inequality.
