Black Music Month Spotlight: The Unit Band Keeps the Rhythm Alive in West Virginia

By Black By God: The West Virginian

June is Black Music Month — a time to honor the powerful legacy of Black artists whose sound shaped the soul of America. And here in the Mountain State, one band continues to carry that legacy forward with every note: The Unit Band.

Deeply rooted in West Virginia, The Unit Band is more than a musical group — they are a living bridge between generations. Their performances bring together gospel, funk, soul, and R&B with the unmistakable energy of Black Appalachian culture. Whether they’re playing at a church celebration, leading a Juneteenth crowd in dance, or lifting spirits in the holler, The Unit Band reflects the sound of Black West Virginia in motion.

This June, Black By God honors The Unit Band not only for their musical excellence, but for their role in preserving and celebrating Black culture across our region. In a state where Black stories are often erased, their music reminds us we’ve always been here, and we’ve always had something to say.

Catch The Unit Band live at the 2025 Juneteenth Community Festival in Charleston!
