Black Business Spotlight: Tasha’s Uniforms — Keeping West Virginia’s Frontline Workers Fresh, Fierce & Professional

By Black By God | The West Virginian

In Dunbar, West Virginia, there’s a small shop that’s been quietly making a big impact. Step inside Tasha’s Uniforms, and you’ll find color, comfort, and care stitched into every rack of scrubs.

The store is owned by Tasha Ellis, a woman whose journey from employee to entrepreneur shows what it looks like to bet on yourself and win. For over 20 years, Tasha helped countless workers find their uniforms at the Charleston Department Store. When that store closed, she didn’t hang up her dreams — she opened her own.

Now, tucked inside the Dunbar Village Plaza, Tasha’s Uniforms serves as a one-stop shop for the people who keep West Virginia running: nurses, CNAs, teachers, techs, and service workers who show up every day to care for others.

Building on Legacy

Tasha took everything she learned from decades in retail and built something lasting. Her store carries trusted brands like Cherokee, Barco, and Landau, along with shoes, stethoscopes, badge reels, and compression socks.

But what keeps people coming back isn’t just the selection, it’s the service. She greets customers by name, remembers their fit and favorite color, and helps students preparing for their first clinicals feel like professionals before they even clock in.

When asked why she opened her shop, Tasha simply says she wanted to be there for the community that’s always been there for her.

A Ripple Across the State

Since opening her doors, Tasha has drawn customers from all over West Virginia and even out of state. Word travels fast when someone treats you right. Nurses, educators, and caregivers make special trips to Dunbar just to shop local and support a Black woman who’s turned experience into ownership.

Her story was recently featured on WCHS-TV, where she was called a modern-day role model for women in business. Around town, folks just call her “Miss Tasha,” and that title says it all.

Why We’re Spotlighting Tasha’s This Month

This October, Black By God is lifting up businesses that remind us what community looks like in motion.

Tasha Ellis doesn’t just sell uniforms; she suits up the people who hold West Virginia together. From hospital hallways to classrooms, her work touches thousands of lives. Her shop is proof that Black women’s leadership is not only vital, but visionary.

We’re spotlighting Tasha’s Uniforms because her story is our story — one of resilience, faith, and showing up with pride for your people.
