A 150-foot jump and millions of views: ‘America’s Viral Bungee’ is located in West Virginia

For content creators chasing higher view counts or adrenaline seekers looking for their next rush, the appeal of The Great Bungee Company is hard to ignore. Located in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, the 150-foot drop above a crystal-clear quarry has been dubbed “America’s Viral Bungee.” 

The social media metrics show proof in the nickname. Black creator Monai Ellis, who has over 42,000 followers on Instagram, uploaded several clips of her jump to the platform. Her best-performing Instagram reel racked up more than 23 million views, 114,000 reposts and 11,500 comments. The lighthearted video shows Ellis singing R&B lyrics, throwing peace signs, and letting out comical yells as she bounces between the water and the jump platform. 

“Is this what Spider-Man feels like?” she screams. “I like this! Let’s go! Tom Holland and Zendaya ain’t ready for me!” 

Although Ellis is based in Virginia, her metrics suggest that The Great Bungee Company does more than draw tourists to the Mountain State. The attraction offers a built-in opportunity for locals to post captivating content that can reach wide audiences, turning regional tourism into a potential organic growth tool. 

The jumps are captured from multiple angles, with footage available for purchase. The Great Bungee Company also posts videos to its own social media, many of which reach hundreds to thousands of likes, views, comments and shares. With about 31,900 Instagram followers and 28,000 on Facebook, the company offers creators something beyond the jump and the footage: access to a second audience that could amplify their reach. 

For example, while the video of Ellis performed well on her own social platforms, it was also posted to the Great Bungee Company’s Instagram, reaching about 4.8 million views, 8,942 reposts, and 1,009 comments. 

The Great Bungee Company officially opened in May of this year. It is located at the Old Standard Quarry, surrounded by cliffs and the landscape of Harpers Ferry National Historic Park. The site is a one-of-a-kind bungee experience in the United States, with a cantilevered tower extending from the highest point of the cliffs over spring-fed, aqua-colored water. 

Visitors can choose between an ankle or body harness, dipping into the water or staying dry, and diving forward or falling backward. The rebound of the bungee cord is up to 80% (or 120 feet) of the original jump height. 

A first jump costs $141.51 plus tax, while additional jumps (same day, same person) are $70.75 plus tax. Pricing information on military discounts, combination packages, group rates and souvenirs can be found on the company’s website.
